THIRD ANNUAL WINE AND DINE FOR ROCKWALL PAWS

January 19, 2013

Sandra Solomon, President, greeted an overflowing crowd in the dining room of NINETEEN by Zanata at the Rockwall Golf and Athletic Club for PAWS 3rd annual fundraising dinner and auction. Tables were decked out with pictures of treated or rescued animals, pet treats, and bone-shaped, gourmet ‘Human’ Cookies. A slide show featuring 41 treated HW positive shelter dogs and other dogs, such as Lady, Duke, Klover, and Blue, filled the screen.  Sandra narrated stories of Lady (pka Beyonce) at the shelter for almost a year before being adopted, Jazzy and Duke who were boarded at Ponderosa Pet Resort for behavioral training, and Klover and Blue, mange ridden puppy- mill puppies that are now happy and healthy. Stories of Ranger and Hunter 2011 were updated. Once declared unadoptable, Hunter remains the lead dog in “K-9 Sniffers” in Wisconsin and Ranger lives the good life in Austin.

Bob Lewis led the group as Master of Ceremony, and dinner by Chef Aaron, and dessert donated by “Tiers by Tista” were enjoyed.  Silent Auction gifts filled the tables and a Live Auction was conducted by none other than, Rockwall’s City Manager, Rick Crowley, and Phillip Pierceall.  Guests included Mayor David Sweet; Brad Griggs, Assistant City Manager; Dennis Lewis and David White, City Council; Mark Russo, Justice of the Peace; Shelli Miller, County Clerk; Kim Sweet, Rockwall County Tax Assessor; Molly Peterson, Director of Collin County Humane Society at Rockwall Animal Adoption Center (CCHS@RAAC), and Kellye Robertson, Royse City Animal Shelter.

Sandra emphasized there had been a lot of changes in Rockwall in 2012, but Rockwall PAWS remained steadfast in their mission to reduce euthanasia by Spay/Neuter, Adoption, Treatment of Heartworm Positive shelter dogs, and helping needy animals. She noted dogs are the most talked about, but cats are very much included!!

CCHS @RAAC was well represented and praised for their success in maintaining a 98% Live Outcome, far surpassing the 90% required. Funded by Rockwall PAWS, local veterinarians (Avery, Sealock, Webb, and Loftis) and KCAAP helped keep those numbers high and provided HW treatment for 41 shelter dogs last year. By January end, 88 will have been saved since January 2010.

Sandra spoke of the monthly KCAAP Low-cost Spay/Neuter Shuttle as a means of reducing the numbers of unwanted litters of kittens and puppies surrendered to shelters each year.  Rockwall PAWS and the City of Rockwall will host the upcoming KCAAP “Beat the Heat” CAT MASH on FEB 8th.  “FIX” a female cat/$20.00 and a male cat/$25.00, with a Rabies shot!  For more information call 1-972-472-3500.

The Mission Statement of Rockwall PAWS allows them to help animals in many ways. Sandra thanked everyone for their generous support and emphasized that funding is needed year round. Memberships are available at www.rockwallpaws.org . Do your part:  support spay/neuter, donate to fund Heartworm treatment and medical/surgical care, adopt from your local shelter, stand behind the 90% Live Outcome initiative, and become a member of Rockwall PAWS. SECOND ANNUAL WINE AND DINE FOR ROCKWALL PAWS ‘SOLD OUT’

Occasions at Stone River provided the perfect location and atmosphere for PAWS’ 2nd annual fundraising dinner & auction. Rockwall PAWS President Sandra Solomon greeted a sold out crowd. Each table featured a centerpiece showing photos & stories of saved pets, dog treats, and a Dog Collar for sale for a homeless pet – to be given to the Rockwall Animal Shelter. Pictures of animals treated or rescued were on each table and a slide show played overhead as the audience heard stories of specific rescues of ‘unadoptable’ dogs like Hunter and Ranger, and 9 small Pit Bull puppies from a Puppy Mill raid.

Bob Lewis kept things going as Master of Ceremony, Zach’s Catering provided a wonderful dinner, KE Cellars Winery served Texas wine, and a large cake with the Rockwall PAWS LOGO was donated by Kristen Lacy of Tiers for Tista.

Silent Auction gifts filled the tables and a Live Auction was conducted by none other than Rockwall’s Interim, City Manager, Rick Crowley – although he confessed, ‘It had been awhile’, no one believed him once he started auctioneering.

Other City guests included Kenda Culpepper, Rockwall County Criminal District Attorney, Mayor David Sweet, three City Council members – Margo Nielsen, Cliff Sevier, and Mark Russo, Brad Griggs, Director of Municipal Services, and Shelli Miller, County Clerk. Corporate Sponsors included Soroptomist, Planet Rockwall, Heart of Texas Home Health Services, Margo Nielsen, and Bill and Becky Cecil.

Local Veterinarians, Kurt Avery, David Loftis and Mike Sealock were praised for their participation in “Save A Heart – Save A Life” providing treatment for Heartworm Positive shelter dogs. In support of the required 90% Live Outcome, all HW positive dogs are treated once fostered or adopted. Rockwall PAWS started this program in January 2010 to insure their treatment or rescue. Guests learned more about “Litter-Free Rockwall” – the Low-cost Spay/Neuter program. Sandra stressed that the adoption rate will never pass the birth rate! Adoption and Spay/Neuter are both needed to prevent needless euthanasia. Each year scores of puppies and kittens are surrendered to the shelter.

Animal Hospital of Fate, Ridge Road Animal Hospital, Ponderosa Pet Resort, Stonebridge Veterinary Hospital, and Red Wolf Resort were recognized for helping the shelter during overcrowding. Each boarded two or more animals for FREE from June until December. Implemented by Rockwall PAWS, this and the Foster Home network developed by the shelter prevented unknown numbers from being euthanized. The Mission Statement of Rockwall PAWS allows us to help animals in almost any way. Do your part. Support spay/neuter, donate to fund Heartworm treatment and medical or surgical care, adopt from your local shelter and stand behind the 90% Live Outcome initiative. Make Rockwall the best city for animals in Texas.    www.RockwallPAWS.org
