FOURTH ANNUAL WINE AND DINE FOR ROCKWALL PAWS January 25, 2014
Rockwall PAWS 4th annual fundraising dinner held at NINETEEN at the Rockwall Golf and Athletic Club was ‘sold-out’ !! Sandra Solomon, President, greeted the overflowing crowd. Tables were named and decorated with the pictures and stories of heartworm treated dogs and doggie treats and gourmet ‘Human’ cookies completed the decor. Two big-screen TV’s displayed a slide show featuring 54 heartworm positive dogs that were treated in 2013 and included updates on others helped over the last 4 years, Ranger, Hunter and Blue from 2011. Once declared unadoptable, Hunter remains the lead dog in’ K-9 Sniffers’ in Wisconsin, Ranger lives the good life in Austin, and Blue is a beautiful Blue Pit owned by Bob and Sharon Lewis. A total of 145 dogs with heartworm have been saved by Rockwall PAWS.
Dinner by Chef Preston (Pecan crusted Chicken, Scalloped Potatoes and Green Beans) was topped off by a delicious cake donated for the 4th year by Jared and Kristen Lacy of ‘Tiers by Tista’. Silent Auction gifts filled the tables and a Live Auction was conducted by Rockwall’s City Manager, Rick Crowley. Guests included Kenda Culpepper, Rockwall County District Attorney; Shelli Miller, County Clerk; Kim Sweet, Rockwall County Tax Assessor Collector; Mark Russo, Justice of the Peace; John Benedetto, Rockwall County Constable; David Sweet, Rockwall Mayor; Rockwall City Council members Dennis Lewis, Mike Townsend, and David White; and Jeff Stapleton, Chief of Police, Royse City.
Guest speakers were Molly Peterson, Director of Collin County Humane Society at Rockwall Animal Adoption Center, and Bryan Jackson representing the Royse City Shelter. Rockwall PAWS partners with CCHS@RAAC to ensure all heartworm positive shelter dogs receive the life-saving treatment and in 2013 agreed to treat dogs from Royse City, as well. Other special guests were the families of four treated dogs at the tables named in their dog’s honor: Mary and Blair Johnson for Shannon (they were her 5th family), Sandra and Raymund King for Chewy; Pam and John Benedetto for Samson; and Jennifer Whittmann and Matt Crow, for Beckham.
Donna Fay, RWL, was the very happy and lucky winner of the Gift Card Tree Raffle worth $700.00. Cards were donated by local businesses and board members.
Sandra reminded everyone of the beginning of Rockwall PAWS. Formed with the idea of helping the Rockwall Animal Shelter, after searching various avenues of assistance without success (wrong place/wrong time), Randy Carothers then an ACO suggested heartworm positive dogs be helped since they were ALL euthanized due to lack of funding for treatment…at that time estimated to be around 20% of the dogs. Most adopters will not assume the great expense of treating for HW. Rockwall PAWS has funded shelter dogs since January 2010, turning 145 unadoptable animals in to adoptable ones!!! Local Veterinarians Mike Sealock, Kurt Avery, and Keith Webb were recognized for administering the heartworm treatment.
Sandra thanked everyone for their generous support, but specifically recognized ‘Barking Donors’: Alex and Cindy Tayem, Lynn Crosby, Phil and Paula Barlow, Sherry and Kevin Dodd, and Rockwall Women’s League all for donating over $1000.00 to Rockwall PAWS. Corporate Members were recognized: Community Bank, Mike McCallum; CNA Medical, Alex Tayem; Rockwall Construction, Doug and Lynda Morris; and Hearing Professional Center Deborah Price Au.D.
Rockwall PAWS remains steadfast in its mission to reduce euthanasia by Spay/Neuter, Adoption, Treatment of Heartworm Positive shelter dogs, and helping needy animals. Dogs are the most talked about, but cats are very much included. Cats contribute greatly to the number of unwanted and homeless animals that end up in shelters. Rockwall PAWS continues to work with the City of Rockwall and Spay Neuter Network in support of a monthly low-cost S/N Shuttle and Mobile Animal S/N Hospitals that SNN brings to Rockwall each year.
Support spay/neuter, donate to fund Heartworm treatment and medical/surgical care, participate in fundraiser’s or become a supporting member, adopt from your local shelter (CCHS@RAAC) or the Royse City Shelter, and stand behind the 90% Live Outcome initiative!! Make Rockwall the best city in Texas for animals.
